Over Three Tonnes of Galbanum (Ferula gummosa) To be Harvested From Semnan Province’s Rangelands

This year, three tonnes of Ferula gummosa will be harvested from 400 hectares in eight medicinal plants habitat in Semnan province.

Ali Asghar Semnani, Medicinal Plants’ Exploitation Expert of Semnan’s Forests, Rangelands and Watershed Organization,  pointed out that in the current year, there has been a  40 percent increase in the harvest of Ferula gummosa from the rangelands and natural habitat of Semnan province, then added, “So far we have put together a plan for the harvest of the two medicinal plants of Ferula gummosa and tragacanth from the rangelands of this province.”

He indicated, “The plans that have been arranged, cover the area of 25 thousand hectares, which lays the foundation of sustainable employment in Semnan province.”

He proceeded to say, “According to this year’s motto, “Economy of resistance: action and implementation”, in regards with the cultivation and development of medicinal plants, this organization will be able to implement operations in 5 thousand hectares of the national land to cultivate Ferula gummosa in October of 2016, by holding different educational classes and workshops for economic reasons to exploit these lands for the purpose of increasing the revenue and employment.”

Semnani further noted, “A contract was formed to harvest over four tonnes of tragacanth from the natural habitat of this province, this amount of tragacanth has been gathered from 11 habitats of four thousand hectares of productive land.”

The amount of tragacanth that was harvested from the habitats of this province last year, was about one tonne.
