1,713 Medicinal Plant Products in Iran

The general manager of Natural, Traditional Products and Supplement Supervision of Iran’s Food and Drug Administration indicated that 1,713 medicinal plant products exist in the country.

In the opening ceremony of Avicenna National Congress, entitled ‘Avicennian Medicine and Medicinal Plants’ in Hamedan, On Monday August 22, Amir Hossein Jamshidi noted that there is a decrease in the medicinal plant products import to the country, he then added, “So far, 746 traditional medicine products have received a license.”

Referring to the 366 licenses issued for the manufacture of  basic materials of extracts and essential oils, he said, “240 medicinal plants packaging units have obtained their licenses.”

Referring to the inadequate 56 products that are under insurance, the general manager of Natural, Traditional Products and Supplement Supervision of Iran’s Food and Drug Administration went on to say, “375 plant species are used in medicinal plant products.”

Jamshidi said that in Hamedan province we have specific medicinal plants and climates which require special attention, “We are prepared to establish a factory to produce medicinal plant products.”

He pointed out that in the last ten years the products have been 23 times more and that is due to the increase in the licenses, “746 traditional products have obtained licenses in the past ten years.”

He indicated that 211 companies are active in medicinal products, 123 of which are manufacturers, “Natural, Traditional Products and Supplement Supervision of Iran’s Food and Drug Administration, on average has issued a license for traditional and natural-based products, every single working days of the past ten years.”

The general manager of Natural, Traditional Products and Supplement Supervision of Iran’s Food and Drug Administration stated that there are 86 companies producing traditional medicine, “Export in the field of traditional and natural-based products will be successful.”

Jamshidi continued to say that we have 1,300 products registered in World Health Organization and the import of medicinal products has decreased.

In the end he said, “I will enunciate that Hamedan’s University of Medical Sciences, is the first university to be delegated the responsibility to review the work and products’ processing, by itself. Although, even in the universities of center of excellence this has not been made so far.”
