Medicinal Plants Have the Fastest Yields Among Agricultural Products

The head of Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Yazd province said, “Medicinal plants are considered to have the fastest yields among the agricultural products.”

the sideline of his visit of an array of medicinal plants of Sang-Ahan Markazi Bafgh Company and in an interview with IRNA reporter, Seyed Jamal Sajadi Pour expressed his contentment of all the activities done for the green space of this company and added, “Considering the shortage of water in the country, Iran has an approach towards plants that require a little water and that have a high economic value.”
He indicated that it is recommended to cultivate medicinal plants due to their little need for water and said, “There is a good capacity in the green space of Sang-Ahan Markazi Bafgh Company and that in the future, we are hoping to increase the area under the cultivation of medicinal plants and eventually industrialize their processing.”
Sajadi Pour deemed it suitable to cultivate a variety of medicinal plants such as lemon beebrush, spearmint and Hyssopus officinalis in the county of Bafgh and added, “As of late February, in the form of a research project, these items have been cultivated in pilot parks, Ahanshahr complex and green space of Choghart Iron ore mine of Bafgh county.”
Referring to the cultivation of products that require little water with high exploitation being in the agenda of Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Yazd province, he said, “There are 20 species of medicinal plants produced that require little water. These plants are tolerant to sweet and salt water.”
This official considered traditional medicine and the cultivation of medicinal plants as ways to recover the macroeconomic issues of health and culture in the country, then indicated, “Aligned with this important issue and being in the year of economy of resistance: action and implementation, we are endeavoring to take effective steps to educate and culturalize the cultivation and consumption of medicinal plants.”
Sajadi Pour said, “For the cultivation of greenhouse products and those that require little water, using pressurized irrigation prevents water from being wasted.” He further noted, “At the moment, the production of greenhouse crops is booming in Yazd province, with the cultivation area of one thousand 250 hectares.”
According to a report by IRNA, currently, 66 thousand of the agricultural lands of Yazd province, is under the cultivation of medicinal plants, over 2 hectares of which is located in the county of Bafgh.
Medicinal plants’ harvest season in Bafgh county commences in mid June and continues up to mid September, the exploitation of these plants during this period is three to four times of harvest.
Out of the species cultivated in Bafgh county, thyme, lemon beebrush, hollyhocks and common mallow, Hyssopus officinalis, Salvia officinalis,milk thistle and artichoke can be named and it is predicted that this year over two tonnes of medicinal plants will be harvested from this county.
